Gladiator shows started in the 3rd century BC and were a great source of entertainment for the roman people. The gladiators, mainly war prisoners and slaves, were forced to fight other gladiators, or even animals.
When one gladiator was defeated, it was the public who decided whether he should live or he should be killed in the arena by his opponent – if he put up a good and (more importantly) entertaining fight, he would survive for another battle.
